Art

At The Minster Junior School, we value every child. We seek to provide a rich and relevant curriculum for all pupils. The curriculum taught will prepare our children to become full and active citizens in an ethnically and culturally diverse society.

Throughout the school, art and design is seen as a way of exploring ideas, concepts and cultural differences. Children will have opportunities to work in a variety of media such as observational drawing and painting, printmaking, charcoal, textiles and clay. Children are taught to develop and improve their mastery of techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

They will be introduced to the work of artists and crafts people through books, pictures,  museum and gallery visits and will keep on-going sketchbooks as a visual diary and record of their work and ideas throughout their time at The Minster Junior School.

All children are invited to special projects in school to extend and showcase their talents led by our resident artist and art leader Mr Saunders, who takes weekly workshops to support the children’s topic work. You can see some of their work around our school & in public spaces around Croydon centre.

The children have won several regional and national art competitions that not only raises their confidence, it gives the children a taste of exhibiting – showcasing their art all over the country.
